HOMEWORK
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are now ready for the hectic time of the year.
Wednesday is library day. Please be sure your child has his/her book in school
The Christmas Around the World projects should be completed by December 8.
It is my tradition in first grade to celebrate Polar Express Day during the week we celebrate St. Nicholas Day. So Friday, December 4 the first grade will continue with this tradition. We begin by reading this book, and Max Lucado’s book, “The Crippled Lamb” and base all the day’s activities on these books. While we are learning, the emphasis is on having a fun day filled with activities. In keeping with the spirit of the day, I am asking that your child bring a robe, (or big pajama top) and slippers to school that day. The children do not change into their pajamas, but rather slip the robe or pajama top on over their uniforms, since we will be doing several projects. The children will not need a snack that day as we will have a special treat. Because we celebrate this special day early in December, I do not have a Christmas Party. As Christmas approaches I try to keep the emphasis on the religious aspect of the holiday and the real meaning of Christmas for the children.
Please don’t
forget the “No Room at the
Inn” display at Divine Redeemer in
Mt.
Carmel. Our class will have their shoe
box Nativity Sets on display, as well as a classroom quilt and a
variety of
ornaments the children have created in their free time.
Hours are Friday from 4:00 to 8:00, Saturday

The Christmas Around the World projects should be completed by December 8. Many of the children have already told me what countries they have chosen. Please let me know as soon as you decide since I want to avoid duplication of countries. There are some useful website links on our class page under Other Sites of Interest. I’ve also included some pictures from our recent science lesson on this same page.
I will be sending home book orders again. This will most likely be the last one before Christmas. If you wish to order any books, please make the check payable to Scholastic. Please have orders returned by Friday. If you wish to use any of these as gifts, place a note on the order, and I will let you know when they arrive.

HOMEWORK
Tuesday is gym day.
Wednesday is library day. Please be sure your child has his/her book in school.
Thursday is picture day.
Thank you again for the effort you put into your child’s saint costume. The children really learned about the saint they portrayed, and enjoyed sharing this knowledge with the class. I have placed pictures of our saints on our website on the calendar page.
Each year I also try to make a shoe box nativity set with the children. I am asking that by Monday, November 9, each child brings a shoe box which has been covered with wrapping paper. Please cover only the outside bottom of the shoe box. The lid should be sent in, to make it easier for the children to carry the project home, but the lid need not be covered. Please do not cover the inside of the shoebox. If you have religious wrapping paper, or a solid color paper that would be the best, since the shoe box will serve as the stable. The reason that we are working on our nativity sets a little earlier than usual is so they can become part of a display “No Room at the Inn” that will be held at Holy Angels.
Our next major project will focus on Christmas traditions around the world. If you have a personal Christmas family tradition you would like to have you child focus on instead this is another option. Again the choice of the project is up to your child. It may be a poster, booklet, diorama, ornament, mobile or any other creative way to talk about how other countries celebrate this time of year. Please let me know which country your child has chosen as soon as a choice is made, since I will try to discourage children from duplicating countries.
I am attaching information about the Phillies Reading Program. Please be sure to log the minutes your child reads each day. I will be submitting these for our class’s chance to win a visit from the Phillies Phanatic.

It includes all the necessary information to get your child started with this activity at home. The children will also be given the opportunity to use this site in school. I am sure they will enjoy this alternate way of reviewing math facts.

I will continue to reward the students with a prize from the book box for every 2,000 points they gain. If you have not had your child sign up for this website yet I strongly encourage you to give it a try.
I also signed our class up for the Phillies Phanatic reading program. I received an email this week confirming our enrollment in the program with a note that materials are on the way. Until the official forms arrive I am sending home a calendar for you to initial each day that your child reads at least 15 minutes. A reminder that the project for the school’s 50th anniversary is due October 13. If you finish ahead of time the projects may be sent in at any time. If anyone finishes by Wednesday it might be nice to have the project on display when visitors come to our school on Wednesday.
Progress reports will
be sent home on Friday in the test folders.
Please sign and return all papers in the folder the next day. I am very pleased with the overall progress
that the children are making.
Once again I am reminding you that since we have been in school about 6 weeks, I would be happy to meet with you, rather than wait until the formal conference time in December. I can usually meet with you immediately at the end of the day at about 2:45. I am also usually here by 7:10, and can meet with you then until the first bus arrives generally around 7:25. If you would like to schedule a meeting please write me a note or email. I feel waiting until the scheduled conference time in December is just a little too long if you have questions or concerns.

HOMEWORK
Tuesday is our gym day. Please be sure that your child comes dressed in the appropriate uniform. Please be sure that your child’s name is inside both the sweatshirt and the sweatpants.
Wednesday is a day off. This is the day of the teacher’s conference in Harrisburg. If you are planning to go to the fair please use this day instead of having your child miss a day of school.
Thursday is an Act 80 Day. Dismissal will be at 12:30.
Please remember to let me know what saint your child will be for our All Saint’s Day Parade. They should have the three sentence report about this saint in their copybooks by Thursday, October 1. This will enable us to start typing our reports on the computer. I am encouraging the children to choose saints rather than angels or our Blessed Mother so that they can learn something new.
Please don’t forget to let me know about the project for the school’s 50th anniversary. They should be completed by October 13. If you finish ahead of time the projects may be sent in at any time.
I am sending home a blue prayer card folder that should help you as your child learns his/her prayers.
Yet more time - I am attaching another order for a yet a different Highlights Magazine Puzzle book. Once again I’m asking that even if you are not interested in receiving it that you return it signed to me. This does allow me to get classroom aids for our room. Thanks for your cooperation with this thus far.
I will be sending
home the test folders with the children for the first time this week. Please sign and return all papers in the
folder the next day. I am very pleased
with
the overall progress that the children are making.
We will have been in school about 5 weeks. If you would like to set up an appointment with me to check on your child’s adjustment to first grade I would be happy to meet with you.
Religion – Please review on a daily basis and continue to practice prayers. We will be working on chapter 4 and be learning about St Theresa, St. Francis, Saints Michael and Gabriel, our guardian angels, and Mary as Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.
Math –We will continue working on problem solving, and continue working with addition. I want to stress to you the importance of the children memorizing the addition and subtraction facts as they are presented. It is very important that these facts are memorized for quick recall. We will do a little work with shapes, and begin working on adding with 3 addends.
Language Arts – Please continue to read at least 15 minutes each day. Please review appropriate vocabulary. Please . We will continue to practice color words, working with beginning and ending consonant sounds, as well as the short A and short I sound. This week the words from the practice book which should be studied are the words in the back listed under theme 2, weeks 1 and 2. Please practice reading “The Watch Me Read” books, and from the anthology “Val Can Help!” The children will have a spelling test on words with the short A and I sound next week.
Again don’t forget if the children have access to the internet http://www.starfall.com is a wonderful site for them to visit to practice these skills on their own.
Science and Social Studies – We will be continue our in class discussion of the senses and the seasons of the year.
HOMEWORK
Tuesday is our gym day. Please be sure that your child comes dressed in the appropriate uniform. Please be sure that your child’s name is inside both the sweatshirt and the sweatpants.
Wednesday is also dress in our class color day for Homecoming Week. Mrs. Corrigan and I talked it over and decided that first grade would be wearing blue, since if your child doesn’t have a blue shirt, he/she could wear the gym uniform sweatshirt. The children are to wear nice jeans and a blue shirt (any shade) with blue socks etc.
Wednesday is also library day. Please be sure that your child has his/her library book in school that day.
Friday is red and white day. The students are to wear jeans with a Raider’s shirt (or any red or white shirt if they do not happen to wear a Raider’s shirt). It is also crazy sock day. On both dress down days please be sure your child wears his/her gym sneakers so if it is nice out we can go outside.
Remember that anyone wishing to order books from the latest Scholastic book order that orders are due on Friday.
It’s time to start thinking about our annual parade of the saints. I try to make this a religion lesson for the children as well. I am asking that the children think about the saint they would like to portray and then write three sentences in their copybook about this saint. We will then type our stories on the computer. Please have this completed by October 1. This will enable us to start typing our reports on the computer . I am encouraging the children to choose saints rather than angels or our Blessed Mother so that they can learn something new.

Wednesday. We
will continue to practice color words, working with beginning and
ending
consonant sounds, as well as the short A and short I sound. The
children
will have a spelling test on words with the short A and I sound next
week. These words include: in – it
– him – big –
sit - did - dish – milk – an - at – can – cat – had –
man – catch – add . The

words and use
these words in sentences. Again don’t forget if the
children have access
to the internet http://www.starfall.com
is a wonderful site for them to visit to practice these skills on their
own.
Science and
Social Studies – We will be
continue
our in class discussion of the senses and the seasons of the year.
Since Our Lady of Lourdes will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year I though it might be appropriate to have our first major project for our Hallway Museum focus on this topic. I would like the children to create a project with the theme of “50 Years Ago” . I’m keeping the topic very general so the children can focus on something that is of interest to them. The website http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1959.html. should be a help to get you started. You will see that Alaska and Hawaii first became states fifty years ago. Maybe your child would like to find out more about either of these states. The first astronauts were chosen. Maybe your child has an interest in space and would like to learn more about one of the first astronauts. Barbie made her debut. Again maybe your child would like to find out what other toys were popular etc. Of course if they have Grandparents or great-grandparents that would like to give them first hand information about Lourdes, Shamokin or the area in general that would also be wonderful! Let your imagination be your guide. I am asking that once your child has decided that you please let me know since I will try to encourage the children not to repeat the same topic as someone else.. Please keep in mind that the projects should be able to fit in the display case at the hallway end near the cafeteria. The children may choose to do posters, small models, dioramas, books, mobiles, stories, etc. The most important aspect of this project, however, is that your child is ready to talk about the project to our class and explain what he/she has learned. I will try to place some links on our webpage to information on this topic. Have fun! Please do not let this become a chore but rather for it to become the opportunity for your child to become an expert in a topic for his class. I would like all projects completed by October 13.

HOMEWORK
I will try to send a reminder
sheet like this home at the
beginning of every week.
In it a will
give you a brief summary of the material we will be covering and any
reminders
that might apply to our class.
I want to thank you for helping to make the first few days
of school this year go so smoothly.
Thank you for returning the
forms in a timely manner and for sending in
the needed supplies for the classroom.
I was happy to meet all of you at the Meet the Teacher afternoon last Sunday. Once again I am reminding you not to hesitate to get in touch with me by email if you have any questions. I am very happy with how well the children have begun their new school year. It is quite evident that we will be able to accomplish a great deal this year.
Gym
day for our class
will be on Tuesday.
Please have the
children come dressed in their gym uniform.
I
am sending home on
an additional book order form for the Scholastic books. If you wish to
order
books please return the form and payment by Wednesday Sept. 9th.
Please make all checks payable to the Scholastic Book company. Remember
you can follow the directions I gave
you with the order forms on Sunday and go on line to order directly. The
same due date applies to these
orders.
If at any time during the
year
you want to use books as a gift for your child, please indicate this on
the
order form and I will let you know when the books arrive instead of
giving them
to your child.
Finally, I am attaching a form for Highlights Magazine. I am asking that you sign and return this form checking no even if you are not interested in subscribing to the magazine. I can receive classroom aids for all returned slips even if they are checked no.
REMEMBER THAT OUR OFFICIAL TIME FOR STARTING THIS YEAR IS 7:50.
By 8:00 the children begin their class subjects including their specials. If tey are coming in later than 7:50 they will be missing some subject time, since we may already be on our way to gym, etc.
As
an added incentive to encourage the children to read I
registered our class at a website called bookadventure.org. Our
class name is “majorstars”. This
is in all lower case.
If your child is interested in this activity visit the website and have them clip on new users. Then click on the at school user star. Work to complete the form and then the children will have access to a wide variety of activities including a list of books. If they read any of the books on this list they can complete a quiz on the book, and I will receive the results. Once they have earned so many points they have the opportunity to be rewarded through an incentive program.
I have used this website in the past and it is a safe site, which gives the children an opportunity to check on reading comprehension. I hope to see many of the children registering.
This is just a very brief outline of what we will be doing next week.
